ContiSportContact 5 ranks third in sport auto summer tire test

13/03/2017
  • Sports tire from Continental offers high safety in the wet and short braking distances, and scores top marks for aquaplaning

  • Magazine also attests to its “balanced, precise handling”

In the summer tire test staged by auto magazine sport auto (issue 4/17), the ContiSportContact 5 took third place. The magazine’s testers attested to its “very safe lateral guidance in the wet, high resistance to aquaplaning, short braking distances on dry asphalt, and balanced, precise handling.” The experts from sport auto tested seven on-highway tires and three semi-slicks in size 225/40 R 18 Y, with a Toyota GT 86 as the test vehicle. Noting the outcome of their tests for the ContiSportContact 5, the journalists described it as: “super safe under aquaplaning and with the fastest lap times on the race track.” The experts from sport auto firmly advise against using semi-slicks on the road: “(The tires) struggled to get a grip on the wet asphalt. Even such simple maneuvers as braking in the wet required much more space,” they wrote.

The ContiSportContact 5 is a sporty tire for more powerful cars with firmer suspension settings, from mid-range models upward. From this season onward, this model and the ContiPremiumContact 5 will gradually be replaced by the new PremiumContact 6. The PremiumContact 6 from Continental combines the highest safety characteristics with a high level of comfort, a precise steering response and a good environmental performance.  To attain this new level of engineering, the tire developers at Continental have formulated new compounds, optimized the tread design by borrowing from the high-tech SportContact 6 sports tire, and created a tread that makes for a particularly comfortable ride. In its first year, the new tire will already be available in 70 sizes, for rims from 16 to 21 inches to fit passenger cars and SUVs.
